  5. Mailing lists are used to disseminate information about a common topic of
  6. interest to a list of subscribers by email. There are two kinds of mailing
  7. list: reflectors, which simply reflect message from one subscriber to all
  8. of the other subscribers on the list; and distribution lists, which
  9. disseminate information from a single source to all of the subscribers on
  10. the list.

  12. To participate in the traffic on these lists, you need to be able to
  13. receive email from the Internet, either directly, or through a gateway. In
  14. general, all of the lists operate in the same way. There is an address used
  15. for list maintenance commands, and another address used for the
  16. dissemination of messages, which is shown below as the reflector address.
  17.  
  18. It is important that list commands (the most common commands are SUBSCRIBE
  19. and UNSUBSCRIBE) not be sent to the reflector address, for two reasons. The
  20. first reason is that sending the message to the reflector will not
  21. accomplish anything. The command must be sent to the right address to take
  22. effect. The second reason is that many subscribers to the list pay for each
  23. message they receive, and seeing a message that says SUBSCRIBE or
  24. UNSUBSCRIBE joe@blow.com, for which they have just paid a quarter, is not
  25. likely to make their day.

  27. If you are interested in joining one of the mailing lists below, the first
  28. thing you should do is send a message to the Subscribe address containing
  29. the word HELP on the first line. Within a few minutes, or perhaps a few
  30. hours in some cases, you will receive back a full description of the list's
  31. purpose and a set of commands that can be used to subscribe, unsubscribe,
  32. or get other information out of the list server.

  34. There are many different flavors of list server software, and each has its
  35. own command structure. For reference, the subscribe command is shown in the
  36. list below. However, it is not unknown for the list manager to change
  37. software from time to time and the commands will change when this happens.

  39. In the list below, substitute YOUR email address for <user@site> and
  40. substitute your name for <name>.
  41.  
  42. For example, to subscribe to the Contest forum, send a
  43. message to CQ-Contest-Request@tgv.com with the word SUBSCRIBE
  44. in the body of the message. To send a message to all of the other
  45. subscribers, send the message to CQ-Contest@tgv.com.
